The Unceasingly Difficult Virtue

The Unceasingly Difficult Virtue

July 30, 2026 Comments 0 Comment

Patience is still a difficult virtue to practice.

I have gained an incredible example in its use through my husband, whose patience is so abundant it allows his stubbornness to edge out my own. And yet he uses his patience to love well.

My inclination towards impatience often leads me towards anger, sadness, and a lack of self control. Motherhood has not bestowed me with additional understanding and patience, but rather has given an abundance of opportunities for the practice of this great virtue. To say I put most of these opportunities to good use would be a lie.

Moreover, I am left reflective upon how much less patience I practiced in previous chapters of my life. I am learning to slow down and make the most of unplanned moments. Often feeling as though having to turn the stove off to nurse or having to leave the unfolded laundry pile for the fifth time as interruptions, I am working to remember these “interruptions” are my dream. Laundry and dinner may be important, but they will never compare to a missed giggle, cuddle, or a little hand in mine. Sometimes I am so focused on a single flower, I miss seeing the field I am in. And it is a beautiful one!

I awaited today for a long time. I do not want to miss a single moment. God answered so many of my prayers in the wonderful family he has provided and the daily life I get to live. I am learning slowly how to love God, my spouse, and our child better and how to give the best of myself.

Prayers for more patience are happily accepted!
